How the Media Fuels Terrorism, in 3 Graphics
When lies are facts, terror is justice and murderers are heroes
The firebombing in Colorado is just the latest horrific terrorist attack on people for being Jewish or at a Jewish event. It came right after the media was pushing a disproven lie about Israel allegedly firing on aid recipients in Gaza. The recent slaughter of a young couple in Washington DC, who were at a Jewish event, came right after the media spread a disproven lie about babies in Gaza.
The mainstream media is the biggest tool in terrorists’ arsenal. It spreads their claims faster than the worst propagandists in history could have dreamed of.
Here’s what we can expect now.
Because when it comes to this kind of hatred, here’s how newsrooms work:
If we care about the truth, we have to care about it always. The same media that lets politicians lie up a storm also lets terrorists and their supporters do so. The solution is for us all to hold the media accountable. To make clear to the people in charge that They Stand Corrected. The media has one job: to tell the truth.
In light of the latest news, I’m updating the episode that comes out this week You’ll hear from Anat Sultan-Dadon, Israel’s Consul General to the Southeast, who describes the “absurd reality.”
“First, we are blamed for something that we never did. Then we are blamed for not responding quickly enough to what we were accused of, because we actually investigate. And then when, a few hours later, we come back with the facts and in this case with video footage, well, the international community has moved on. If you Google, you will still find the allegations presented as fact. It's a no-win situation, because we will have to continue to be grounded in reality.”
It’s the exact opposite of how things should work. The media should be correcting government officials; instead, in cases like this, government officials have to correct the media. It’s the same backward reality that is making radicalized young people see terrorism as justice and murderers as heroes.
