Have you seen the news about the dramatic drop in death tolls from Gaza? The kind of thing I’ve been trying to get the media to understand for months. Hamas, using terms like “Gaza Health Ministry,” has been reporting nonsensically specific numbers of alleged dead due to the war, and claiming that a huge majority of them are “women and children.” This has never made sense. See my previous newsletter about that, “The Media’s ‘Death Toll’ Fails.” Now, they’re admitting that they have not had data to back up their own alleged numbers. Here’s a great post from the awesome Rep. Ritchie Torres:
This week, a quick update episode while I prepare a big two-parter to begin next week. In this update, I talk about a CNN clip sent to me by a listener (who is in the paid subscribers tier here at Substack, but choosing to remain anonymous). I explain why the clip is so important, what it’s missing, and how it inspired my recent Newsweek piece.
While the media is looking for who, or what, to blame for the dangerous, violent protests on college campuses, they should look in the freaking mirror.
The timing is especially important because the Pulitzer Prizes were announced, including for news agencies whose profound journalistic failures are radicalizing people against the Jewish state. If only this were surprising.
Also in this update, the “double whammy” -- how you are being mistreated in two ways when the media feeds you lies.
I explain that comparisons between the campus “protests” and pro-Nazi rallies of the 1930s and 1940s are not far fetched. And based on what I’ve seen, today’s protests are much more violent.
I also discuss Qatar’s investments in U.S. universities. Here’s a report from The Financial Times: “Qatar has emerged as the largest foreign donor to US universities, contributing $5.1bn since 1986, according to one study. Most of the donations were made in the past decade.” And I mention that Al Jazeera is a propaganda outlet owned by the Qatari government — yet the media keep treating it as a legitimate source of journalism.
And, yes, TikTok is a hotbed of antisemitism. But in the lose-either-way setup created by antisemites, any effort to take action on this immediately becomes new fodder for antisemitic conspiracy theories.
What you can do
Critical mass is key. I’m hearing from people inside news agencies that executives will only improve things when they realize that people are listening, and responding, to this podcast. Spread the word on this show, and feel free to send text like this to your local news agencies:
Please listen immediately do the podcast They Stand Corrected, which has been fact checking reports about Israel, Gaza, and Hamas. The show proves that you, and other news agencies, follow rules that require anti-Israel bias. Please stop.
Also, send me links to fact check! If you’re a paid subscriber, send them as comments below. (For other folks, there’s a form at my website that will take you through the process of confirming your email.) It’s all about keeping out haters and spammers!
Big love,
JL
Great idea!!
Where is there a list of the emails for the editors and publishers of major news outlets so we can send them the message to listen to They Stand Corrected and stop the biased reporting?
