Your Legal Rights Against Discrimination at Work
Plus the Washington Post uses an article about a movie to rewrite history
Announcement: Former Microsoft CEO and Clippers owner Steve Ballmer saw what a mess government data was, and decided to organize it to help people understand the country better. News reports about Trump’s changes to anti-discrimination rules are misleading. “President Trump has signed an executive order raising a touchstone of the civil rights era… It ensured equal opportunity in federal hiring by banning discrimination on the basis of race, color, religion or national origin,” a network reported.
Headlines include “Trump rescinds measure used to fight workplace discrimination for 60 years” and “Trump doesn't only want to end DEI, he's also voiding a civil rights era anti-discrimination rule.” A Washington Post column even said, “Trump isn’t the first to upend the federal workforce because of race. President Woodrow Wilson presided over the segregation of government workers, putting Black people behind screens and in cages in 1913.”
These are examples of something being technically true, but leaving you without an accurate understanding. I cover this in the latest episode:

You have legal protections against discrimination in the workplace, no matter who you are. But most people don’t know their rights. I know this not just as a journalist, but as someone who was covered by news media when I launched a legal battle against workplace discrimination. In this episode, I discuss being on the front page of the New York Times, discussed on the Today Show, and more.
But the episode isn’t about me; it’s about you, your rights, and what remains illegal even with Trump’s changes. Along the way, I mention a piece Maria Shriver and I wrote together for the Huffington Post, and a 1965 Executive Order.
The episode also explains that Trump is headed for a showdown against his own Supreme Court pick involving his actions on gender. How is the news media missing this?
I’ll discuss this and related issues in a webinar for Health Links at the University of Colorado on February 19 at 1pm ET. Register here.
Know anyone in the Albany, NY area? I believe there are still spaces left for this upcoming event I’m doing on Feb. 23. Register here.
Also in this episode, the Washington Post (of course) uses an article about a movie to attempt to rewrite history and erase the reality of the Munich massacre. More on that in an upcoming newsletter, so be sure to subscribe.
