The Fight for Truth in Journalism: The Next Generation
Plus, a whole different way to build a career
How is it possible to fact check anything when people have such different paradigms for viewing the world? How can a journalist reach audiences who have chosen random people online to be their sources of “truth?” If people can’t agree on basics like what a woman is, how can they agree to accept facts about anything?
These are the types of questions I faced recently from sharp, interested journalism students at the University of South Carolina. In the new episode of They Stand Corrected, you’ll hear my answers.
For starters, they wanted to know a lot about how I built my career, like how I went from showing up as a volunteer at a local station’s pledge drive to becoming an NPR reporter the next year. I told them the unusual path I took, and how I’ve always turned small opportunities into big ones. It’s something I discussed years ago in my first TEDx Talk:
